Our Process
At House of Bohi, every rug moves through an age-old handmade process rooted in generations of craftsmanship from our family-led workshop in Bhadohi, India. From yarn preparation and dyeing to weaving, washing, trimming, carving and binding, each stage is carried out by hand, shaping the texture, colour and character of the final piece. By keeping the process internal from design to dispatch, we are able to follow through on our vision, uphold our standards, and deliver handmade rugs defined by quality, traceability and quiet permanence.
01. Yarn Spinning
The process begins with fibre. Wool and other natural materials are carefully hand-spun into yarn by skilled hands, guided by patience, technique and rhythm.
02. Yarn Dyeing
The yarn is then dyed by hand in carefully prepared batches, allowing each shade to build with richness and nuance. Temperature, timing and the behaviour of the fibre all play a role in the final tone.
Once dyed, the yarn is hung in the open air to dry beneath the Indian sun, where the colour settles naturally into the fibre before it moves to the loom.
03. Weaving
Once the yarn is ready, the rug begins to take form on the loom or frame. Depending on the design, material and intended feel, our rugs are either hand-knotted, hand-tufted, hand-loomed or flatwoven by artisans whose expertise is shaped by the demands of each technique.
This is the most defining stage of the process. Every line, texture and surface is built gradually by hand, with attention to proportion, tension and detail. It is slow work, but it is this patience that gives the rug its structure, balance and lasting quality.
04. Washing, Stretching & Drying
After weaving, each rug is washed by hand to cleanse the surface, settle the fibres and reveal the depth of its colour and texture.
Once dried, the rug is carefully stretched and aligned on a frame so it dries flat and holds its intended shape.
Depending on the season and weather, it may remain there for several days before drying fully in natural sunlight, allowing the pile to soften and the fibres to take on their finished sheen.
05. Finishing
Finishing is the final refinement, carried out carefully by hand. Depending on the design and construction, this stage may include shearing to perfect the pile, trimming for clarity, hand-carving to reveal depth and definition, and binding to secure the edges into a considered frame, bringing the rug to its finished expression.
06. Final Inspection
Before a rug is prepared for dispatch, it passes through a final quality inspection.
The surface, edges, binding, pile height, carving and overall finish are carefully checked to ensure the piece meets our standards. It is a quiet but essential stage, where the work of many hands is reviewed one last time before the rug leaves Bhadohi.
07. Packing & Dispatch
Once approved, the rug is cleaned and vacuumed to remove loose fibres before being carefully packed by hand for its onward journey to you.
Each piece is packed with care, protecting the texture, finish and structure of the rug during transit.
