Care & Maintenance
Each House of Bohi rug is crafted by hand using premium natural fibres and time-honoured techniques.
With a little care, it can age beautifully and remain part of your home for years to come.
This guide outlines simple practices to preserve its texture, colour and structure.
Everyday Care
Vacuum your rug regularly to prevent dust and grit from settling into fibres.
- Use a low-suction setting
- Avoid beater bars or rotating brushes
- Vacuum in the direction of the pile where applicable
For handwoven and flatweave rugs, gentle suction is sufficient.
Rotate your rug every three to six months. This ensures even wear, particularly in high-traffic areas or rooms with direct sunlight.
Attend to spills immediately.
- Blot gently with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub.
- Use cold water and a mild, wool-safe detergent if required.
- Test any solution on an inconspicuous area first.
- Allow the rug to air dry naturally.
Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach or over-saturating the fibres.
Handcrafted rugs may occasionally develop small fibre ends or 'pop-ups.' These are a natural result of handweaving and do not indicate a fault.
If this occurs, trim it carefully with scissors to match the surface height. Do not pull, as this may disturb the surrounding weave.
Some initial shedding is normal, particularly with wool and natural fibre rugs. This is most noticeable during the first few weeks of use and will reduce gradually.
At House of Bohi, each rug undergoes a unique hand-finishing process designed to minimise excess fibre release. While this significantly reduces shedding, light fibre release may still occur.
Regular vacuuming using low suction helps remove loose fibres and allows the rug to settle more quickly.
Material Specific Care
Wool is naturally resilient and soil-resistant.
- Expect light shedding initially; this will reduce over time
- Vacuum regularly to manage loose fibres
- Professional cleaning is recommended every 12-18 months, or as per use and soiling.
These rugs are best suited to low-moisture environments.
- Keep dry at all times
- Avoid placing in kitchens, bathrooms or damp spaces
- Spot clean only, using minimal moisture
Rugs made from blended fibres combine strength with softness.
- Follow wool-care practices
- Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture
Placement & Storage
Natural fibres can fade gently over time when exposed to direct sunlight.
- Use curtains or blinds in sun-heavy rooms
- Rotate your rug periodically
- Consider layering in spaces with heavy foot traffic
A quality rug underlay is recommended to prevent slipping and to extend the life of the rug.
If storing your rug:
- Roll it with the pile facing inward
- Wrap in breathable cotton or muslin
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Avoid plastic coverings for prolonged storage that block airflow
Professional Cleaning
We recommend professional rug cleaning for deep maintenance.
- Choose a cleaner experienced with handmade and natural fibre rugs
- Avoid steam cleaning or machine washing
- Never dry clean handmade rugs
